Yea, a bit too harsh. I don't quite agree with you either.
I think it's largely due to the canons eventually being 'locked in' after the invention of the codex. The doctrine of inerrancy is one of the things, imo, that lead to the Bible being
completely out of context in modern Christianity.
well said....
i am really enjoying the book...(and videos )
I was raised to believe the Bible was inerrant AND infallible...:God's inspired word...
and while i agree with what Naz says...
these are the verses used by most (most of whom are YECers as i was)
The Bible says:Proverbs 30: 6 Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.
1 Cor 4:6 Now, brothers, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, "Do not go beyond what is written."
Rev 22: 18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. 19 And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.
after researching more how and why these could be so used...
i realized these were grossly misinterpreted and pulled out of context with "intent"
First let us look at Proverbs 30: 6
which actually begins this way
Proverbs 30
The Words of Agur
1The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, the oracle. The man declares to Ithiel, to Ithiel and Ucal:
2Surely I am more stupid than any man,
And I do not have the understanding of a man.
3Neither have I learned wisdom,
Nor do I have the knowledge of the Holy One.
so the words quoted are written by Agur to Ithiel and Ucal....
after having stated....NOR do i have the knowledge of the Holy One...
and yet this verse is commonly interpreted to be God saying...do not add to my Holy Bible....(which we must also consider that man has translated -in many different inconsistent ways)
Okay 1 Corinthians 4
..lets look at in in context...
1Let a man regard us in this manner, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2In this case, moreover, it is required of stewards that one be found trustworthy.
3But to me it is a very small thing that I may be examined by you, or by any human court; in fact, I do not even examine myself.
4For I am conscious of nothing against myself, yet I am not by this acquitted; but the one who examines me is the Lord.
5Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men's hearts; and then each man's praise will come to him from God.
6Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively applied to myself and Apollos for your sakes, so that in us you may learn not to exceed what is written, so that no one of you will become arrogant in behalf of one against the other.
7For who regards you as superior? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?
here it appears to me, that paul is not speaking of what is implied...
but rather asking men not to judge (as was one of his themes) and not to try to..."outdo" each other...and be "better" than one another....
For the verse in Revelation, i
again...let us look in context...Rev 22:
18I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; 19and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.
Though i have heard this used to explain ..i have never understood. It appears rather obvious that it is speaking of the prophecy John is writing...not a "book" as a whole like the 66 included books of the Bible...(considering those had not been chosen yet by men...when this was written..)
if the belief of infallibility and inerrancy are withdrawn...
it leaves the YEC no leg to stand on...
and many other "doctrines" of man...
too many are unwilling to let these go...
(and some...unable)
