If God existed, then he would have made the police officer who gave me a ticket this morning for not wearing my seat belt show more compassion and let off instead of the fining of me of $234.50 of which he actually did. Jesus! That's a lot of money to lose for not wearing a seat-belt. Ah well. This stuff only further discourages me from ever learning to drive. Hi VazScep, great to see you on the boards. I thought you'd dropped off the face of the earth! A colleague of mine refuses to drive, he cycles everywhere - what about you?

Hi VazScep, great to see you on the boards. I thought you'd dropped off the face of the earth! Good to see you here, too. It'd be great to see some of your philosophy posts here. I for one refuse to post at CARM again, and I think there are others here who feel similarly. I *really* enjoy walking. My brain works best when my legs are working. I also walk fast, so the two and a half miles to the office doesn't bother me much.

I'm glad this board is gaining some momentum now, it's a nice place to hang out. [/QUOTE] You know what, I think I'll have to give it a go? Hey guess what, I'm finally studying mathematics! A couple of bridging courses, then onto some undergraduate material next year. I just love the subject. -Brendan

Me too, I quit CARM on general principle. As did I. With insanely smart people like you, there should be no shortage of conversation. We do need more theist members(specifically non-Christians). I know Gavriel is pretty smart as far as the Jewish CARM-ites are; can anyone access that part of CRAM and cordially invite him and other rational theists? Eventually we're going to have to break away from CRAM(I've already brought a couple of Christians from elsewhere as a start), but, at the moment, it's a rather useful pool from which to get new members.

Therefore, God doesn't exist. QED. Oh, and Hi ya'll. Cheers, -the dubiously-bummed blowfly I'm sorry to hear about your ticket - and that's a HUGE fine!! When I was twenty I was cut-off by a guy in a red pick-up and ended up rolling my car over into the ditch - not wearing my seatbelt (I was lucky, I only bruised my knee). The police showed up and questioned me, and asked if I had been wearing my seatbelt. I decided to come clean as there was no harm done (to me that is - my car was totalled). The very nice officer then proceeded to issue me a seatbelt fine......... The icing on the cake was that when my parents showed up, they thanked the officer for giving me the fine as they thought it would teach me a lesson.

How are you studying? I really need to get back to maths, otherwise I'm going to forget completely how to do proofs, but I haven't needed to do much in the last year or so.

While I personally buckle my seat belt... I feel that the so-called Seat Belt laws are absolutely unconstitutional. Most of the traffic regs are. But that's my opinion and the govt. could care less. They figure: as long as they're paying for the shoddy road construction every year, they can dictate to us whether we buckle up or not.
So, this sort of thing makes me lose faith in government, not God. But that's a good post and I've been there. Some country cop actually gave me a ticket on my BIRTHDAY once. They had a speed trap set up in a neighboring county we drove through. I'm pretty sure some of these municipalities stay in business through these means.
Rant ended-thank you! ;D (Felt pretty good to get that off my chest, actually!)

Well, I'm not sure it's all a dark plot to deprive you of your constitutional rights and raise revenue; most regulations I think are for the most part well intentioned. But on this subject there may just be some rather perverse consequences. I'm too lazy to look up the references, but for example: mortality amongst cyclists wearing helmets may actually be higher, because motorists take less care when they see a hard-hatted cyclist; removing all the traffic signs and signals in a small English town actually lowered the accident rate, because motorists could no longer rely on the signs but had to keep their eyes open; the effectiveness of seatbelts is reduced because the added perception of safety makes motorists more reckless (so airbags may be better; they will work when you smash, but they still leave you loose and rattlin'). So naive regulation is sometimes worse than no regulation.

How are you studying? I'm studying through open learning at the moment (correspondence/internet). In a year or so I'll probably have to do a proper degree or something to take it much further. A friend of mine recently sparked my interest in Cryptography, it seems to be the cutting edge of mathematics and number theory... Cool. Still haven't quite got my head around exactly what your work is, but it sounds pretty far out there Cheers, -blowfly
