Now how do I get the boards to email me when an update is posted? Is there a simple way to "subscribe" even if I am just lurking in a thread?

Actually, I figured it out. You press the "bookmark" button on each thread you want to track.
There's an option in your profile settings for how you'd like to be contacted when a bookmarked thread is updated.
