Something very odd has been going on in Uganda. After the remarkable success of its 'ABC' program to combat HIV in the 90's (Abstain, Be faithful, and use Condoms), AIDS appears to be on the rise again. And now there's legislation pending that prescribes the death penalty for 'repeat offender' homosexuals. What the hell happened?
It's looking increasingly like Christian fundamentalism is what happened, courtesy of "The Family" amongst others. These whack-jobs have been promoting only the 'A' part of ABC, with a little help from PEPFAR - resulting in shortages of condoms - and homophobia along with it. They don't seem to give a damn about the consequences of their nasty little dogmas, and that their homophobic campaign is increasingly looking like it might turn into a pogrom against Ugandan homosexuals.
It's still not entirely clear what has been going on, but for a sobering update here's an article in the Observer. But that's not the sobering part. Take a look at some of the comments that follow. People are going to die from this talk, and let us hope it does not turn out as badly as in Rwanda.
If you are a US citizen check out this list and if your congressman appears (and they are all men), please do what you can.
