I just noticed that the buttons allowing you to add or zap Karma have disappeared! What happened?
Also, how exactly does it work? I think 'reputation' of one kind or another is very important; it's an expression of how much the population as a whole values that poster. In a well-designed system it should be possible to completely manage trolls using some rule like "if you get more than -10 karma in a day then you're off for 24 hrs". Individuals could choose not to view anyone who has a posts/karma > 20. Does anyone know how karma works on this system?

I have no idea. I gave someone a +rep and then the buttons disappeared. Perhaps it's one daily.

No wait! The karma button just came back. I gave you an experimental bump (although I was rather tempted by 'smite', heh!) and the buttons disappeared for everybody again. So it looks like you can give out something like one Karma point per hour - and presumably likewise for smites. Any volunteers to be experimented on with 'smite'? I wonder if 'smite' costs the smiter a karma point as well?

IMO the way it works at carm seems the best, though the smite option is fun (though it should probably be limited.)

I disagree with smiting.
Notes that one poster is already on -5.
For shame.

Exalt/Smite can be disabled. Meh, I've no problem with Exalt.

I did like that CARM utilized vB's option to allow you to see not only what post you got the rep for, but also from whom you received the rep points.

Exalt/Smite can be disabled. Can you tell me how to disable Karma? I dislike "rep". I was on one board in which the juveniles repped each other incessantly. It was a popularity thing and had absolutely nothing to do with quality of posts. Even among adult posters, it seems to me that humorous posts are valued more highly than informative ones. How anyone can say that rep (or Karma) is a meaningful measure of anything much escapes me.
